Tube Amplifier Repair Service
I have been playing guitar and dealing with tube amplifiers for 40 years here in Kingston.
Now that I am retired I am offering repair service for vintage and vintage-style tube amplifiers.
Basically I look at every amp as if it was my own. I recommend repairs that I would do
(and have done) on the many tube amps that I have owned, repaired, built and modified for
myself and my friends.
The following is an example of what I would do on all repair jobs.
1) Tighten and clean every tube-socket pin
2) Clean all the pots
3) Check and set the bias current on the output tubes to a recommended value
4) Remove the "Ground" capacitor attached to that switch on the back (safety issue)
5) Replace the two wire ac cable with a 3-wire grounded one (again, safety first)
6) Solder a direct wire from the external speaker jack ground lug to the main speaker
jack ground lug.
Fenders depend on the ground going through the two speaker jacks’ chassis connections
and that failed on me once. I always wire the output transformer speaker connections
directly to the main speaker jack’s lugs.
7) Visually inspect for components that might be over-heating, e.g. screen resisters on
power tubes.
I charge a basic look-at fee of $30
I will charge a small mark-up on parts, to cover ordering and shipping.
I have sourced out several places to buy such things as tubes and capacitors.
Estimates on jobs are firm; if I run into something unexpected I will contact the customer
and talk about it. There will be no surprises.
Amps can be dropped off at The Kingston Guitar Shop
